Synopsis and Plot Summary

A story focused on the reality of China’s agrarian reform and its development that took more than half a century. It follows the lives of farmers living in the countryside of Northern China.

Alongside the establishment of the New China, farmers headed by Niu Dadan (Chen Baoguo) receive lands to cultivate while the son of the land owner Ma Renli (Feng Yuanzheng) is left with nothing. Niu Dadan and Ma Renli can be considered as enemies yet they are also good companions. One being bold and the other being cultured, the two use their diligence and wisdom to lead the villagers in overcoming natural disasters, thus allowing them to have bountiful harvests.

Gou-er (Chen Yuemo) represents the new generation of farmers who not only contribute to the prosperity of the village, but also took the villagers to Russia to continue to develop agriculture. In 2006, the Agricultural Tax Regulations were abolished giving the farmers more freedom. Niu Dadan looks at the green fields of the wheat village with tears in his eyes and a heart full of hope...

Fun Facts

It is Chen Baoguo and Feng Yuanzheng's second collaboration.
Throughout filming, Chen Baoguo kept to himself and refused to talk to others in order to fully immerse into the character.
The Chinese Farmers (Old Chinese Farmers) is the first of the 'Old' series from actor Chen Baoguo and writer Gao Mantang which was followed by Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Old Chinese Doctor) and The Legendary Tavern (Old Tavern).
