Synopsis and Plot Summary

A story between Ning Yi, a prince who goes against the tide and Feng Zhiwei, a descendant of the former dynasty as they fight to stay alive in spite of the dangers brought by those who lust for power within the confines of the palace.

Feng Zhiwei (Ni Ni) is the descendant of the Fire Phoenix General. Because of her status as an illegitimate daughter, she is ostracized, looked down upon and eventually kicked out of the Qiu manor. In order to survive, Feng Zhiwei disguises herself as a man and enters the Qing Ming School as a student where she impressed with her intelligence and talent. Wanting to serve her country, she becomes embroiled in the fight for the throne and pledges her support to the man that she believes would become a good ruler. However, her past forces her to take the opposing side against the 6th Prince Ning Yi (Chen Kun).

Fun Facts

  • Filming lasted more than six months beginning on May 25, 2017 and ending on December 9, 2017.
  • Filming took place in Xiangyang, Wuxi and Duyun City, Guizhou Province.
  • On October 18, 2016, Chen Kun was the first to be announced as the male lead. This drama together with Lost in 1949 were his comeback dramas after years of making movies.
  • On March 7, 2017, Ni Ni was announced as the leading lady.
  • Over a thousand crew members worked day and night for 197 days to complete the production.
  • The original novel emphasizes the phoenix's rise to power and focuses on the heroine. Due to Chen Kun being the leading man, the story will be tweaked to put more importance on his character.
  • At one point, the drama was titled Feng Quan Yi Tian Xia to include Yi from Chen Kun's character named Ning Yi. However, the title was eventually changed to Tian Sheng Chang Ge.
  • Despite the hype around two movie stars headlining the drama, tv viewership ratings were below expectations and even fell below dramas that didn't have much hype. On August 16, 2018, the production team released a statement to say that the show's Douban reviews are high but viewership was unusually low. They also go on to describe that fake ratings is a problem in the TV industry and that they refuse to participate in manipulating views.
  • Initially slated for 70 episodes, there are rumors that the low ratings were the reason that the show was cut short on Hunan TV to end after 56 episodes.
  • William Chang Suk-ping did the costumes for the main leads while Fang Sizhe designed the costumes for the rest of the cast.
