Synopsis and Plot Summary

Taking place 50 years before the events of Chinese Paladin is the story of Jing Tian and Xuejian, two fated people who are connected by the jade pendants they each possess. Following the drastic changes in Xuejian's life, the two set foot into the pugilistic world where they encounter Xu Changqing, Zi Xuan, Long Kui and many others in a thrilling and memorable adventure.

Thousands of years ago in the heavenly realm lived a courageous general named Fei Peng who fought against demon general Chong Lou (Jerry Huang). Fei Peng commits a grave mistake and gets stripped of his status as a god. After many reincarnations, Fei Peng now lives as the pawnshop assistant Jing Tian (Hu Ge) who aspires to become a student of the Shu Mountain Sect. Fated by the pendants they both possess, Jing Tian eventually runs into the spoiled and cheeky Xuejian (Yang Mi) who is the daughter of the powerful Tang family.

Meanwhile, Chong Lou breaks into the Shu Mountain Sect to retrieve the magical sword belonging to Fei Peng. Chong Lou challenges Jing Tian to a duel as he returns his sword to him. From then on, Jing Tian’s life as an ordinary young man changes. As Jing Tian is brought into the turmoil of Xuejian's family and comes to learn about the troubles of his past, he overcomes many challenges in his journey to becoming a hero.

Fun Facts

Although it is known as Chinese Paladin 3, the story is a prequel to Chinese Paladin.
Filming took place in Hengdian World Studios.
Filming lasted four months from August 10. 2009 to December 10, 2008.
One of action choreographer Chen Weitao's regrets in Chinese Paladin 1 was that he has never played the game before. For Chinese Paladin 3, Chen Weitao had already played some games so he added action sequences from the Chinese Paladin 3 RPG game into the series.
After his car accident, Hu Ge lost confidence in his acting career and felt insecure. During preparations for Chinese Paladin 3, Hu Ge took on the role of Jing Tian because he was comfortable with the crew and believed that he can play the role.
Even during the early preprations for the script and the character designs, the production team was unanimous in choosing Wallace Huo as the best man to play Xu Changqing so they contacted him immediately. Although Wallace Huo was excited for the role, he turned it down due to schedule conflicts. The production team offered the roles to Mike He, Roy Chiu and Leo Ku, none of which worked out for various reasons.
Lee Kwok Lap reveals that he reached out to Wallace Huo to play Li Xiaoyao in Chinese Paladin but it did not work out due to schedule conflicts.
The production team originally had Yang Mi in mind for the role of Xuejian but she was already cast in The Dream Of Red Mansions. After considering actresses like Charlene Choi, Angela Zhang, Ady An, Ariel Lin as well as newcomers, fans pleaded with Yang Mi's agency for the opportunity to take the role. At the end, the production team of Chinese Paladin 3 was able to borrow Yang Mi from The Dream Of Red Mansions so that she could play the role. At the time, filming had already begun for over ten days. Yang Mi was glad that she didn't miss out because she used to play Chinese Paladin 3 in high school and she really liked the character Tang Xuejian.
It is Hu Ge and Yang Mi's second drama together since they starred in a segment of The New Strange Stories.
Having played the game himself, Yuan Hong found the role of Yun Ting memorable and requested to play the role even though it's a character that does not have many scenes.
During the screentests, Tang Yan tested for Tang Xuejian while Liu Shishi tested for the role of Zi Xuan.
It is Jerry Huang's first costume drama. He had to spend more than 4 hours daily on hair and makeup.
