Her fandom Mi Feng is a play on her name and short for going crazy (feng) for Yang Mi (mi) 为幂而疯. Mi Feng translates to honey bee.
She went into acting at the age of 6.
She graduated from Beijing Film Academy. She gained admission to the school in 2005 with top scores.
Yang Mi gained attention after appearing in the 2006 wuxia drama The Return of the Condor Heroes starring Liu Yifei.
Yang Mi and Liu Yifei are often compared against each other due to the similarities in their acting careers. Both are part of the Chinese Paladin franchise, both starred as Bai Qian in the drama and movie version of Three Lives Three Worlds Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms respectively.
Yang Mi used to be under H&R Century Pictures which led to her establishing her own studio in collaboration with the agency in 2012.
