Synopsis and Plot Summary

Set in 1930s Shanghai, the conflict between the Communist Party and the Kuomintang converges at Hengshan Hospital when a man on the run for a crime he did not commit impersonates a doctor.

Coming from poverty, Ma Tianming (Qin Junjie) has no principles nor beliefs. In his eyes, money is the only thing that's reliable. Wandering the streets of Shanghai Bund, he finds himself unwittingly becoming involved in a massacre. While trying to escape, Ma Tianming assumes the identity of Doctor Cai Likun (Tu Songyan) in order to hideout in Hengshan Hospital.

Zhu Tiande is a businessman holding on to a large stash of funds. He has suddenly fallen ill while being pursued by his enemies and it draws the attention of the Kuomintang spies, the Japanese military and the Green Gang who all want a piece of the pie. Meanwhile, Cai Likun who is a doctor returning from abroad has also been admitted to Hengshan Hospital due to his injuries. In reality, he is a Communist agent sent to make contact with Zhu Tiande. Cai Likun allows Ma Tianming to continue using his identity as they form an alliance to deal with the various factions at the hospital. In the dangerous battle of wits and will, Ma Tianming becomes inspired by Cai Likun's high morals and follows in his footsteps to become a true revolutionary.

Fun Facts

The booting ceremony was held in Shanghai on November 25, 2018.
Filming of around 100 days wrapped in March 2019. They had a total of 1606 scenes, 2700 costumes and 150000 props.
