Synopsis and Plot Summary

Set during the Ming Dynasty, the story follows the journey of a palace maid who joins the bureau in charge of preparing meals for the imperial family. In pursuit of mastering Chinese cuisine, she meets friends and falls in love with the young prince Zhu Zhanji.

The vast empire of the Ming Dynasty enjoys a time of peace and prosperity to attract countless envoys from different kingdoms. In order to entertain them properly, the Yongle Emperor issues a decree for any woman with cooking skill to enter the palace and join the recruitment for royal cooks. After many rounds, Yao Zijin (Wu Jinyan) is selected to become part of the food bureau.

Yao Zijin meets the acquaintance of Luo Xingqiao who was born a beggar and Su Yuehua who is a genius chef. Their presence ignites Yao Zijun's interest in cooking as the three pour their heart and soul towards making innovative dishes and ingeniously integrating Chinese medicine into scrumptious delicacies. Through her own efforts, Yao Zijun gradually moves up the ranks all while her love story with Zhu Zanji (Xu Kai) begins.

Fun Facts

Filming lasted from October 15, 2020 to February 5, 2021.
It is said to be the Chinese version of Jewel in the Palace due to the similarities in theme.
At the boot ceremony, Wu Jinyan prepared a burger for Xu Kai. They both said it tasted great with Wu Jinyan saying, "It's food from the Royal Feast, it's definitely good."
Filming took place in Hengdian World Studios.
It is a reunion between Story of Yanxi Palace stars Wu Jinyan and Xu Kai.
In 2019, Yu Zheng had announced that the drama will mark Xu Kai and Bai Lu's third time as an onscreen couple after The Legends and Arsenal Military Academy.
It brings together the crew of Story of Yanxi Palace and Winter Begonia.
A crew specializing in food production and filming were invited to present more than 600 Chinese delicacies to be shown in the drama.
In history, Zhu Zhanji is the fifth Emperor of the Ming Dynasty.
It has hit 200 million views on MGTV 3 days after premiere and 400 million views 5 days after premiere.
