Synopsis and Plot Summary
The story follows the 39-year-old Chen Jialing who tried to break out of the mold for almost 20 years but eventually ends up with nothing. Taking place in the time of Taiwan’s economic takeoff, it tells a story of hard work, disappointment, despair and self-love.
Chen Jialing (Hsieh Ying-Hsuan) has officially entered the losers club. Twenty years of hard work and she hasn’t reaped anything—no house, no car, no husband, no kids and now—not even a job.
Born in a province in Tainan, Chen Jialing grew up in a very traditional family that had all their hopes placed upon the eldest child —her. As a young girl, she never had playmates and would often talk to herself just to feel a little bit happier. Yet even with her efforts to keep herself contented, she knew deep down that there was a yearning within her to leave this lonely town and see the bigger world outside.
Now an adult who's nearing 40, Chen Jialing has been through the ups and downs in life. It doesn’t matter that she’s lost all the material things society has required her to have—Chen Jialing has got all the experiences and wisdom to become the ordinary yet courageously confident woman who knows how to accept and love herself.
